A surprising thing about the referendum was that no one explained what, it turns out, we’re leaving. The EU is an elevator with complete economic integration at the top floor. The ground level is the international trade order built after 1945, and the elevator rises through progressive levels of integration architected around free movement of the factors of production – labour, capital, goods and services.
